In 2013, a video filmed in a Tehran hospital spread widely in Iran. It showed a woman on an operating table with an intimate injury caused by a light bulb, filmed without her consent by a member of the medical staff who mocked her. At the time, I was studying Jeff Wall’s After “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison, the Prologue, in which a Black man hides in a basement lit by hundreds of light bulbs. In this work, I respond to that video and ask what remains of the trust we once placed in doctors, who, as our grandparents used to say, keep our secrets.
