Hashem Shakeri
MADI
In this long-term personal project, Hashem Shakeri tells the story of his grandmother, Madi (1924–2016). She lived a turbulent life and faced many hardships. In her last years, a stroke left her unable to speak, and she then developed Alzheimer’s disease. Yet her spirit never broke: she remained full of hope and love until her last day. Shakeri photographed her during the final eight years of her life. Through these images, we also follow his own path as a photographer and as a grandson. The series reflects on old age, which is not only a slow decline but also a sudden break that throws everything into disarray.
