The Lake on Its Last Legs
Lake Urmia, in northwestern Iran, was once one of the largest salt lakes in the world. Today it is shrinking fast and may disappear altogether. It used to draw tourists, and boats once crossed its waters. Now much of the water is gone, and large stretches of the lakebed can be crossed on foot. In the warm months, the rising salinity turns the remaining water red. Knowing the lake may soon vanish, people of all ages and backgrounds come to visit while they still can, to make memories before it is gone.
