This series began with a loss of faith in the power of art. On 8 January 2020, the loss of the Ukrainian airliner near Tehran, with all 176 people on board, left me in a deep silence. Other hardships followed: the pandemic, a water crisis, the departure of family and friends. Some mornings I woke up feeling like a ruin myself. As an artist, I wondered what art could still do in the face of so much loss. Here, ruins become a metaphor for pain. I invited women painters to paint whatever they wished on the walls of abandoned buildings: an image laid over the past, and an open question for the future.
