Demo is a series of fourteen photographs about the crowd in Iran’s contemporary history: generations of people brought together by shared hopes and demands.
Combining staged and documentary photography, the artists place figures in double exposure over fragments of archival images of public gatherings, chosen regardless of their ideology. Past and present merge.
The series asks a simple question: who are “the people”? As Gilles Deleuze wrote, the people are missing; they have to be invented.
